A Tour of Hotel Albert.
Charlies
Room: Situated at the
front of the hotel upstairs, Room #1 is the only room with access to the
balcony that extends over the front porch. It is rumored that Charlie
Chaplin was in Butte, Montana when he was notified by wire of his screen
test in Hollywood. Traveling by rail, Chaplin stayed in DeBorgia and reportedly
stayed in this room.
The
Doctor's Room:
Also situated toward the front of
the Hotel, Room #2 was reportedly used by a visiting a physician to treat
patients due to its natural light provided by three tall windows. Regular guests claim that this room has the most comfortable bed, but you'll need to decide for yourself.
Room
#3:Decorated with a masculine flair with
vintage sports paraphenalia, this room is still waiting for a story to
emerge from hisory to give it a name.
Ginny's
Room:
The last room, at the rear of the
hotel, is named for Virginia Albert, daughter of Edward and Emma Albert.
In the winter of 1925 - 1926,
Ginny grew ill and was confined to this room. But being sick is boring
and lonely, so little Virginia would stand at the window watching and waving
to all the townspeople and children passing by. The schoolhouse and
playground were visible from her window because the trees planted since
the big 1910 fire hadn't had time to grow tall. At night she needed
a lamp lit and turned down low, because she was afraid of the dark.
Sadly, Ginny did not survive that illness, which
could have been anything from influenza to smallpox. She died on
January 17, 1926 at the tender age of five. For years after, the
residents of this town would report that they saw Ginny waving to them
from the window of this room. And the Albert Family would frequently
wake to find that the lamp in the room had been lit during the night and
turned down low.
Little Virginia and her parents are buried in
the tiny cemetery just east of DeBorgia. Her tombstone has a small
white lamb resting on top.
There haven't been any reported sighting of Ginny
in recent years, but if you see her, please give her a hug.
There are two large common bathrooms for guests. One has
a claw-footed bathtub (bubblebath provided if you desire), while the other
has a large shower.
Real life tours are also available for free at the Bed & Breakfast.
You can find Hotel Albert in DeBorgia, Montana. Exit 18 off
of Interstate 90, 88 miles west of Missoula.
You can't miss it, really!
